Queen Elizabeth - Historical Figure. Female, 40’s-50’s, Caucasian. In her prime, one of the most educated individuals and popular sovereign in England. She reluctantly granted Sir Walter Raleigh a patent entitling him to occupy such lands as he may discover in the name of the crown of England. Very formal and in control of herself and her kingdom.
Sir Walter Ralegh – Historical Figure. Male, 30’s, Caucasian. Well educated descendant of the landed gentry. Born to a protestant family in Devon he is one of the most colorful characters in English history. Navigator, historian, soldier, poet and explorer. Witty, intellectual and flatterer who appealed to the Queen’s intellect, vanity and sense of fun. Dreams of establishing a colony in the New World. Handsome, despised by the court, but highly respected by his friends and relatives in the West Country of England.

Eleanor White Dare – Historical Figure. Female, age 19 (modern equivalent 24-29 years old) Caucasian. Born and lived in London. Beautiful and unassuming character. She was an independent and intelligent member of the rising middle class. Daughter of a gentleman, John White. Singing is an advantage. Pleasant singing voice for lullaby. Betrothed and wedded to Ananias Dare. Cares deeply for John Borden. Mother of Virginia Dare, first English child born in North America.

 

Simon Fernando – Historical Figure. Male, 40’s-50’s, any ethnicity. Portuguese brilliant ships navigator and master from Azores Island. Pompous and at times belligerent. Some stage combat. Does not believe the colony will be successful.

Old Tom – Historical Figure. Male, lived 40’s. Contemporary of Sir Walter Raleigh. Lower Class. Well Educated, could have been a school master whose students drove him to drink. A drunkard that rediscovers himself in the New World. Comedic role. Should be able to carry a tune.

 

Manteo – Historical Figure. Male, teens-early 20’s. Native American chieftain. Assisted colonists. Stage combat.

Uppowoc – Historical Figure. Male, Uppowoc – Historical Figure. Male, mid 20’s. Native American medicine man.
Father Martin – Historical Figure. Male, 40’s-50’s. Caucasian. Priest of the Church of England. Spiritual leader of the colony. Performs christening of the first English child born in the New World, Virginia Dare.
Dame Coleman - Midwife to Eleanor DareDame Coleman – Historical Figure. Male, Dame Coleman – Created Character. Female, 40’s-50’s. Bossy midwife. Cares for Eleanor Dare during her pregnancy. Very outspoken.
King Wingina - Roanoke Island IndianWingina – Historical Figure. Male, Native American King of the coastal tribes. Some stage combat. 

 

Wanchese – Roanoke Island IndianWanchese – Historical Figure. Male, late teens-early 20’s. Native American chieftain outranking Manteo. Becomes enemy of the colony. Stage combat.

  

 

 

 

Governor John White father of Eleanor DareGovernor John White – Historical Figure. Male, 50’s, Caucasian. Gentleman of the rising middle class. An English artist and painter whose family origin was in the West Country of England. Father of Eleanor Dare. Governor of the colony. Returns to England for aide and never sees his daughter or granddaughter, Virginia Dare again.
John Borden – Created Character. Male, 20’s-30’s, Caucasian. Lower class. Tenant farmer who can read and write from Devon, England. A natural born leader who is rugged and practical. He believes the colony in the New World to be a noble venture. Cares deeply for Eleanor Dare. He is attractive, but not necessarily in a traditional way.

 

Ananias Dare husband of Eleanor DareAnanias Dare – Historical Figure. Male, late 20’s-30’s, Caucasian. Slightly older than Eleanor. A Gentleman, rising middle class, and an English tiler and bricklayer who lived in London. Betrothed and wedded to Eleanor. The father of Virginia Dare, the first English child born on Roanoke Island. Captain of the colony.
Ensemble Singers
Male & Female singers (all ages and ethnicities) to play colonists, native Americans, and potentially cover principal roles.
