The Roanoke Island Historical Association (RIHA) owns a property located less than a mile from Ft. Raleigh called Morrison Grove. This property is home to 5 apartment buildings and 22 apartments. This property was donated to the Roanoke Island Historical Association by the Morrison Family in the 1960’s and is where RIHA houses its actors and technicians for each season of The Lost Colony.

For at least 10 years, Morrison Grove had been in need of renovations if RIHA was going to provide housing that was comfortable, safe, and hospitable for our Company Members. In the summer of 2020, while The Lost Colony was dark due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Board and staff of RIHA began a fundraising campaign for renovations at Morrison Grove. This initial campaign was successful, and several units were renovated before the 2021 season. Work on Morrison Grove continued in the fall of 2021, with new decking being installed on several buildings. In the winter of 2022, the Board of Directors solicited the State Legislature for funds to complete renovations at Morrison Grove. These renovations went further than before and called for gutting the apartments to install new bathrooms (toilets, lights, vanities and showers), new kitchens, new floors, washers and driers in each unit, as well as some new furniture. The Board’s solicitation were successful and money to renovate Morrison Grove was included in a $5 million Capital Grant that was awarded to RIHA by the State of North Carolina in early 2024.

Today, Morrison Grove features 22 apartments with updated appliances, furniture, and fixtures, some of the nicest actor housing in all of outdoor theatre. An outdoor shower building was also added in 2024 to give Company Members a place beyond the single bathroom in each apartment to clean off after The Lost Colony each night. .
