Virginia Dare Babies Announced!

Virginia Dare is one of the most influential historical figures to the Outer Banks. Dare County and Virginia Dare Trail are named in her honor. As the first English child born in the New World, her name is found in history books across America. In celebration of her 431st birthday, The Lost Colony continues its beloved tradition of casting local infants in the performance. On August 18th, six babies perform throughout the evening, appearing in different scenes. Virginia Dare Night is sponsored by First National Bank.

This year we will feature two nights with live babies as Virginia Dare! The six babies that will make their debut on Saturday, August 18th are: Susan Valerie Northrop, daughter of Margaret and Paul Northrop of Raleigh, NC; Claire Doxey, daughter of Esther and Jeff Doxey of Wanchese, NC; Kennedy Sanford Basnight-Moran, daughter of Caroline Basnight and Allen Moran of Manteo, NC; Mabel Gray Barker, daughter of Alex and Rob Barker of Manteo, NC; Nola Wrae Powell, daughter of Laurette and Brent Powell of South Mills, NC; and Hadley Mabel Basnight, daughter of Katie and Zack Basnight. The 2018 Virginia Dare babies will be added to a long list of community members who participated in the historic drama at a very early age.

Virginia Dare Night Baby Auditions

Virginia Dare Night Baby Auditions held at The Lost Colony

Events sponsored by First National Bank

The 81st Anniversary Season of The Lost Colony commemorates the 431st birthday of Virginia Dare, the first English child born in the New World to colonist Eleanor Dare on August 18th, 1587. The Lost Colony continues its long celebrated tradition of using real babies during the August 18th performance. Being a “Dare Baby” is a coveted role in the community that many local citizens have had the opportunity of being a part of. For Virginia Dare Night only, the prop baby, swaddled in blankets, is replaced with these special guests. Virginia Dare Night is generously sponsored by First National Bank.

To be considered for the honor of appearing on stage, all babies must attend an audition meeting on Saturday, July 21st at 10:00 AM in The Lost Colony Building located by the Elizabethan Gardens within Fort Raleigh National Historic Site. Members of the cast and administrative staff will be on hand to assist in the screening process. The casting is open to all cheerful boys and girls that are less than 15 pounds.  All Virginia Dare babies must be available for several hours on the evening of August 18th for pre-show preparation and for The Lost Colony performance. All selected Virginia Dare babies will be introduced from the stage prior to the performance at 7:45 PM.

In addition to the Virginia Dare Night performance, The Lost Colony and National Park Service will join forces in a special Virginia Dare Faire on the grounds of the Fort Raleigh National Park Site on Saturday, August 18th from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM.  Also sponsored by First National Bank, all aspects of the Faire will be free to the public and families are encouraged to attend.  Fun activities for children led by The Lost Colony company members and National Park Service employees will be both educational and entertaining. For further family entertainment, attend the performance of The Lost Colony that evening starting at 7:45 PM. More information is available on the website at www.www.thelostcolony.org or by calling the Ticket Office at (252) 473-6000.  The Lost Colony runs nightly through August 22, except Sundays.

PNC Bank Returns as Presenting Sponsor

PNC Bank Returns as The Lost Colony’s Presenting Sponsor

The Roanoke Island Historical Association today announced that PNC Bank will again be the presenting sponsor of The Lost Colony production this season. Last year, for the 80th anniversary season, PNC became the production’s first presenting sponsor since opening in 1937.

“We could not be more honored to have PNC Bank back again as the presenting sponsor,” said Bill Coleman, CEO of the Roanoke Island Historical Association. “We are grateful for PNC’s dedication to the arts and history of our region.”

PNC Bank’s sponsorship recognizes the historical significance of the Lost Colony story and the economic, educational and cultural impact the production has within the Outer Banks community and throughout North Carolina. Opening night is May 25, 2018.

Additionally, PNC Bank continues to support the Kids 5-and-under Ticket for free admittance to The Lost Colony performance. The PNC Kids 5-and-under Ticket allows families with young children to more affordably attend The Lost Colony, giving children the chance to learn about music, dance and theater as they develop the social and cognitive skills needed for long-term learning.

“The Lost Colony is an enduring mystery for all of us who are fascinated by this story,” said Jim Hansen, PNC regional president of Eastern Carolinas. “Our hope is that another generation finds the history of these early settlers equally fascinating and ignites a curiosity and love of learning in these children.”

More than 430 years ago, 117 men, women and children sailed from Plymouth, England, to settle on Roanoke Island. They vanished two years later. The Lost Colony is their story. In 1937, when The Lost Colony debuted, the attention of the nation focused on Roanoke Island and on the events in early colonial history that occurred there. That year the production was attended by 50,000 people from across the nation, as well as President Franklin D. Roosevelt. The story of the 1587 colony and its disappearance is known across the globe. The Lost Colony is the longest running outdoor symphonic drama in the nation and the only outdoor drama to have received a Tony Honor for Excellence in Theatre.
